Impressive workout against side from the Premier Division last season

Burgh faced their second opponent inside a week who last season were in the Premier Division and will be battling for a ‘swift’ return to the top flight with the visit of Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts to East Shore Park.

But, like Saturday, the Burgh side – containing many new signings – showed no fear and impressed for a set of lads who have only been together a few weeks with another hard-working and impressive performance.

After a battling 0-0 draw at Crossgates on Saturday, which came with a combination of gritty determination, superb goalkeeping and defending with a touch of ‘lady luck’, this evening they went one step further keeper Hillfield opportunities to a minimum with another solid defensive display.

Mitchell Sharp had Burgh’s first real chance on 21 minutes heading over a great cross from the right by Mackenzie Williamson.

Sharp made amends five minutes later, though, when a ball forward by Rhys Sneddon was flicked on by Kellar Harris who beat his man in the area to send Sharp through on goal and he made no mistake slotting home.

Joe Russell, again, dominated his area collecting crosses and blocking any shots that came his way, including an excellent recovery from a clearance in the 37th minute.

As in any friendly, manager Andy Healy rotated his players to give minutes to his squad, but there was still no change in effort or tempo. Matty Mitchell had an effort saved in the 52nd minute before Williamson went close but couldn’t quite divert home on 57 minutes.

But Burgh made it 2-0 in the 59th minute when livewire Logan Whyte smashed home an effort from around 10 yards out after another good move.

Russell made a very good low save at his near post in the 67th minute to prevent Swifts getting back into the game before the visitors netted a consolation late in the game with Hunter netting from close range in the 88th minute.

Whilst it’s important to recognise that there’s no points won from these games and it’s more about fitness and players learning about each other, it’s worth recognising the progress and input the team are making so far which will, hopefully, bode well for the new season which starts next Saturday. Whether it’s the starting eleven, subs or fringe players, they all have an important part to play and they are ready to step into the fray whenever called upon and rise to the occasion.

Burgh: Russell, Malcolm, Sneddon, Mitchell, Roughead (sub: Jowitt 54 mins), Newsome (sub: Coutts 70 mins), McCallion (sub: Trialist 81 mins), Stevenson (sub: Wilson 50 mins), Harris (sub: Whyte 50 mins), Williamson (sub: Tracey 87 mins), Sharp (sub: Trialist 78 mins).
